Enhancing Emerging Tobacco Product Surveillance with Novel Data Streams, by Jon-Patrick Allem, Ph.D., M.A.

Dr. Allem is a postdoctoral fellow at the USC Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (TCORS) for Vulnerable Populations and an instructor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He has participated in a number of projects aimed at developing novel ways of improving population health surveillance by utilizing data from Twitter, Instagram, and Google Web Search. Using these data streams, he has conducted studies on the effectiveness of mass media campaigns in the U.S. and Latin America, population mental health in the U.S. and Australia, and public interest in climate change in the U.S. Dr. Allem will present findings from his latest research on how novel data streams can be used to improve surveillance of emerging tobacco products (e-cigarettes, hookah, flavored cigars) in the U.S.
